The Quran Activists Society of the governorate will hold the Quranic event, Qaaf news agency reported.
Ala al-Waeli, head of the society, said in a meeting with Sayyid Jafar al-Mousawi, the head of Karbala satellite TV, that the competition is slated to be held on Thursday, July 1.
He added that Quran recitation groups from different parts of Iraq have travelled to Wasit to take part in the contest, which is named after Martyr Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the former deputy head of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) who, along with then commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Quds Force Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, was assassinated in a US drone strike in Baghdad in January 2020.
During the meeting, Al-Waeli also thanked the TV channel’s support for the Quran Activists Society.
Al-Mousawi, for his part, said Karbala TV will fully support the organization of the contest.
Quranic activities have significantly developed in Iraq since the 2003 overthrow of former dictator Saddam Hussein.
There has been a growing trend of Quranic programs such as competitions, recitation sessions and educational programs held in the country in recent years.
